On the outside, Cornwall Road is a demure Georgian house. But this is a home with a secret identity. Rooms have been opened out, skylights spill sunshine onto wooden floors and handmade sculptures, and the walls throb with colour. Stepping onto the glass mezzanine floor is like flying, and there’s an air of enchantment to the walled garden.
All this, and you’re just two hundred metres from the Thames. Your local cinema has the biggest screen in Britain, your local theatre is the National. Cross the river to Covent Garden, dine at the OXO tower, or go for a spin on the London Eye.
Your host’s architectural involvement is clear, and he and his Canadian partner divide their time between London and Paris. A keen sculptor (you’ll see his pieces dotted all around Cornwall Road) he designed and renovated his home himself.
Pure and simple
As this home so beautifully demonstrates, life really needn’t be complicated. The open plan living space is a delicate mix of textures, from the warm grain of wood to the softness of creamy linen. With windows looking out over the garden and your host’s soothing artwork, this room is an ode to serenity.
Once you’ve investigated the navy and chrome family bathroom, head up the stairs to find two double bedrooms. The spacious master is open plan, with mirrored wardrobes, folding doors and a kingsized bed, next door, the bathroom is full of fluffy towels and White Company toiletries.
The pea-green kitchen’s down on the ground floor, and has all the gadgets you’d expect, as well as extra dining space for two. The garden is accessed through your host’s workshop. Here, you’ll find more sculptures, and a table for four happy souls to sit outside and marvel at just how good life can be.
The bigger picture
Fifteen minutes’ walk can have you in the West End, but first, do linger on the South Bank and enjoy the restaurants and cafes that surround the National Theatre and the British Film Institute. The Globe and Tate Modern are a short stroll along the river, or, the tube from Waterloo to Leicester Square takes a miniscule four minutes.
1 King bed, 1 Double bed.
2 Showers, 2 Toilets
There are a lot of sculptures in this home and an unguarded stairwell drop on the top floor, so it is not suitable for toddlers or children.
This home is spread across three floors and has a lot of stairs, some of which are quite steep.
This home doesn’t have air conditioning. Between June and September, we’ll place fans in each bedroom. Please let us know if you’d like fans outside the summer period.
The bathroom has been updated since our photoshoot, and now contains a shower instead of a bath. The sitting room now has a sofabed and a coffee table instead of a dining table, and there’s now a separate dining room.
The lead guest must be at least 25 years of age.
